A tough workout for the Pirates against a very physical Kilfeacle side. The pack worked hard to contain Kilfeacle at the breakdown, but play was very fragmented with lots of handling errors. It was well into the first half before Pirates started to get the upper hand and Jason Anglim got over for at try just before half-time which was converted by Jack Hickey.
The second half saw a more controlled Pirates display but poor decision
making saw them waste some good scoring chances. The pirates pack began
to take control of matters in the tight and good cleaning of rucks allowed
them to spread the ball wide quickly. This pirate’s team has a good
mixture of youth and experience and their level of fitness paid off
in the end. Joe Hoyne scored the only try of the second half following
quick ball by the backs. Jack Hickey was unsuccessful with the conversion.
Pirates captain Jason Anglim was handed the task of throwing into the
line out and for someone with little practise did a great job. As it
turned out both Clifford brothers James and Martin wore the number 2
jersey’s today, James stood up to the mark as the J2’s did not have
a hooker due to injuries and he did a great job. Martin hooked for the
J1’s.
Thanks to the Kilfeacle coach and Pirates coach for refereeing, it was
not easy.
