Dennehy Cup Semi:
Munster Junior League:
The Munster Junior League started
this weekend with the first team away to
Youghal. Pirates started well and worked themselves into a penalty
position after 5 minutes, from which Eamon Ronan converted, to be followed
quickly by a try from Rob O'Donovan. With dominance for long periods,
Cobh pushed hard and with Youghal's indiscipline hurting close to their
own goal line, Karl Keating, went over to score a try.
Late in the half, Peter Cronin, was deemed to get the touch down from
a rolling maul. Pirates were comfortably ahead 22-5 at half-time. However
for 30 minutes of the 2nd period of play it was Youghal who were re-energised,
and they brought the score board back to 22-17 in the fading moments of
the game. But, Pirates pushed up the field and from a Youghal scrum ,
the ball wasn't controlled, and an alert Eoin McCoitir pounced on the
loose ball to gain the bonus point for Pirates.
Earlier in the Paddocks, a lapse of concentration late in the game, saw
Cork Con steal the Dennehy Cup Semi-final from what is showing up to be
a
great young team full of the products from the underage system. Tom Keavaney
opened the account with Dave McAuliffe adding another 5 points to
leave Pirates lead 10 - nil at halftime. Early in the 2nd half, Jack Hickey
scored a penalty and took a skillful try after an excellent passage
of open play.
However middle way through the half, Cork Con organised themselves with
ex-Munster player Jerry Murray the architect of the
resurgence. Con had a tricky scrum half with good speed and he was to
cap his day with a hat trick, the last in injury time, to leave the score
24-18 to Cork Con.
